Charles Clarke's Anxious Wait -*Updated* Now He's Doomed
Of course Charles Clarke isn't intending to resign. New Labour means you only have to say you take responsibility, you don't actually have to take responsibility.
The question is being asked: What does it take for a Minister to resign? The answer is simple. When it begings to stick to Tony, that's when they have to go.
Clarke is psychic though. He said his reason for not resigning is that the public wanted him to sort out the problem. Spooky. That must be what Tony was prattling on about the other day, New Labour are psychic and know what the public want.
That said, Charles must be crapping himself.
The moment one of his released murderers, rapists, robbers or paedophiles strikes again, he's toast.
How long before we see a tearful mother on TV saying "If this person hadn't been released my daughter would be alive today".
The real beneficiaries of this are the BNP who can castigate Labour and 'foreigners'.
No doubt the odious Nick Griffin will soon be sending Charles a thank you card for all he has done to help the BNP.
UPDATE: Blair Told Me Not To Quit - Charles Clark
And with that comment he has sealed his fate.
Now, when the tearful Mother appears on TV people won't be asking Clarke to resign, they'll be asking Tony why he didn't accept Clarke's offer of resignation.
Significantly, Blair hasn't expressed his full confidence and support for Clarke yet...
Update Blair has given him the kiss of death his full support.
I wonder who will be Home Sec on Monday? Milliband?
Following on from Margret
Following on from Margret Hodge's comments last week, it looks like Labour are campaigning for a good BNP showing in these local elections. Perhaps they see it as the way of galvanising support for Labour in the long term - it worked for Chirac. The gangster got in to beat the fascists if I remember rightly...
Will the campaign slogan after the local elections be that Labour are the only thing stopping the 'real' fascists taking over...?
This excuse "I must stay to
This excuse "I must stay to sort the whole bollux out" was used before.
After the Bichard Enquiry found apalling failures within his force, and Blunkett "instructed" his Police Authority to suspend him, the Chief Constable of Humberside, David Westwood spoke the BBC of his "passionate commitment" to driving through all the changes that would result from the inquiry. He wasn't going to resign!

Actually he has (he did BEFORE the figures came out)... and David Cameron suitably lambastisted him for it at PMQT.
