It appears that Charles Clarke has a suicidal touch. His claim that he offered to resign is a lie. The first Blair heard about it was on the BBC. This is why Blair stormed out of the Chamber and offered lukewarm support.

Will Blair continue to employ a man who lied to him? Blair's so weak he may have to, and that's real humiliation.

Does anyone know what actually happened in the Home Office between the end of August and the announcement about foreign prisoners. For m,ost of that time the official line was they had introduced a system to deal with the problem. Were they lying? Had someone been told what to do and not done it? Had they introduced a system which didn't work? There must be readers of this blog who know the inside story. It matters because it could decide of Clarke has to go which in turn could decide if Blair has to go.
