Letter to Tony Blair and a protest at Downing Street

There will be a CEASEFIRE NOW protest which will take place in Whitehall on Friday 28, 5pm-7pm. The Protest is being organised by The Stop the War Coalition who will deliver a letter to Number 10 Downing Street.

Dear Prime Minister,

Most people in this country are, we believe, horrified at the bloodshed and destruction unfolding daily in Lebanon. There can be no justification for the conduct of the Israeli government and armed forces, which are laying waste to a country in an operation which will hugely damage the prospects for peace in the Middle East.

We are dismayed that the British government, almost alone in the world, is not calling for a ceasefire to enable the suffering to stop. This either shows a deplorable indifference to the plight of the Lebanese people or an attitude of total subservience to the foreign policy of the US administration. Either way, our country is being humiliated and our isolation from world opinion underlined once more.

We therefore call on the government to change its position and join the vast majority of the world’s states, the UN secretary-general and the Archbishop of Canterbury in calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Lebanon to save lives and prevent the destruction of that country.

Please spread the word.

Pentagon planned invasion of

Pentagon planned invasion of Lebanon in 2001 from The Nether World may well explain why George W and his lackey in Downing Street are so keen on buying Israel time to bomb Lebanon to rubble.

"This was being discussed as part of a five-year campaign plan, he said, and there were a total of seven countries, beginning with Iraq, then Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Iran, Somalia and Sudan."

I find the prospect of a 'New American Century' less appealing by the day, especially as the 52nd state is being held responsible as accessories to the crime by most of the world. I remember a time when it was good to be British when travelling in other countries...

Is this what Condi Rice

Is this what Condi Rice meant when she spoke of a "new Middle East" on July 25?

Israeli bomb kills UN

Israeli bomb kills UN observers

I think it would be hard for even Israel to try and justify this,
"I am shocked and deeply distressed by the apparently deliberate targeting by Israeli Defence Forces of a UN Observer post in southern Lebanon," Mr Annan said in a statement from Rome.
It said the four, from Austria, Canada, China and Finland, had taken shelter in a bunker under the post after it was earlier shelled 14 times by Israeli artillery.

Oddly enough Israel trotted out their usual excuse for deliberately killing inconvenient civilians and press Israel has expressed "deep regret". Entirely in keeping with IDF policy they immediately demonstrated their 'deep regret' A rescue team was also shelled as it tried to clear the rubble.

Should we read this as Israel's intented method of dealing with a UN peacekeeping presence in the Lebanon?

It would seem that the only effective solution would be to disarm Israel and place it and the annexed Palestinian land under permanent UN control.

Quite - any 'peace deal'

Quite - any 'peace deal' that doesn't involve at least some punitive measures against the IDF (like sanctions on rearming or withdrawal from the frontier) is going to be a sham. Which is what we're going to get, of course, with the drivelling Condi in charge. What does Jack Straw see in her?

Israel doesn't make mistakes - either their intelligence has lost its edge or they're sending a message to the UN that the US, Israel and NATO are going to sort this out, so back off. Much the same as the Iraqi insurgents did to the UN in Baghdad...

The killing of the UN

The killing of the UN observers demonstrates the true value of Israel's claim to be able to zero in on Hezbollah positions with "surgical precision". Not only do they kill lots of innocent Lebanese (and other) civilians, they even kill a bunch of UN officials of whose exact position they had been formally notified the previous day. Either they did it deliberately, or they are staggeringly incompetent. I haven't heard of anything quite as bad since the USA took out the Chinese embassy in Yugoslavia - also with "pinpoint accuracy" (but unfortunately with obsolete "intelligence").

Adding insult to injury, on this morning's Today programme I heard an Israeli spokesman rebuke the United Nations Secretary-General for saying that the bombing of his people was "apparently" deliberate. According to the Israeli, no one must say anything about the matter until the Israeli government's inquiry is finished! (Presumably around 2083). Colonel Gadaffi should have used that one when he was accused of instigating terrorist attacks. "Nothing must be said until the Libyan government inquiry publishes its findings..."

A better solution would be

A better solution would be to give shitty little Israel a state in the US so they could all MOVE BACK TO WHERE MOST OF THEM CAME FROM ANYWAY. Some sandy, barren doghole would do (make them feel at home) like, say, Kansas or similar. When they then start to bully and butcher their neighbours in order to steal more land/water, the Americans will back it/understand fully/ fund it from taxpayer revenue. See, easy ain't it?

New York Times today also

New York Times today also reports Israeli cabinet commitees were discussing air and land operations against Hizbullah "less than two years ago"

"In secret committee hearings less than two years ago, Mr. [Yuval] Steinitz [who heads the defense preparedness subcommittee of Parliament’s Foreign and Defense Committee]said, he and others on the committee debated the army’s plans for an air war against Hezbollah. “We said that you can’t just do it from the air, and not in three days. We said you can do a good job, inflict a heavy blow to Hezbollah and reduce rocketing. But you can’t stop it, and a quarter of Israel will be in the shelters.”

Cluster Bombs used against

Cluster Bombs used against civilians in Lebanon

(Beirut, July 24, 2006) – Israel has used artillery-fired cluster munitions in populated areas of Lebanon, Human Rights Watch said today. [Source]. Researchers on the ground in Lebanon confirmed that a cluster munitions attack on the village of Blida on July 19 killed one and wounded at least 12 civilians, including seven children. Human Rights Watch researchers also photographed cluster munitions in the arsenal of Israeli artillery teams on the Israel-Lebanon border.
“Cluster munitions are unacceptably inaccurate and unreliable weapons when used around civilians,” said Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch. “They should never be used in populated areas.”

Well... US & UK got away

Well... US & UK got away with doing it in Iraq, so Israel are only following their master's example.

Same with all those lies.

"UN peacekeepers in south

"UN peacekeepers in south Lebanon contacted Israeli troops 10 times before an Israeli bomb killed four of them, an initial UN report says. [Source BBC]

The post was hit by a precision-guided missile after six hours of shelling, diplomats familiar with the probe say."

Apparantly that observation

Apparantly that observation post had been there since 1978 and it had been attacked 14 times before the Israelis finally demolished it. Accident? I don't think so. Now, why would the Israelis do this when they are the ones asking for an international force? Could it be that they want to send a message that they don't want blue-helmeted peacekeepers but a 'robust'force that will hold the conquered territory for them?

Israel want the equivalent

Israel want the equivalent of the local villains specifying the policemen they want round their manor. Which brings us to Stephen Lawrence...

Apparently the Canadian

Apparently the Canadian government is joining Bush and Blair in officially supporting Israel, despite 50,000 Canadian citizens in Lebanon and the recent killing of a Canadian soldier.

Stephan Harper has also been notably quiet about the latters death. In a country which had a national furor when some youths pissed on the war monument to the dead of 90 years ago, I would expect better official treatment of the dead of 24 hours ago.

Do you have a URL to support this, RedEnsign? I know the Canadian government has changed since they refused to back the war with Iraq, but this still surprises me.

Yup, it appears 2 have

Perhaps, however, Harper is

Perhaps, however, Harper is a leader in a minority parliament, not because of his prowess, but because the majority of Canadians who voted (less that 60%) wanted to punish the last government for perceived corruption. It remains to be seen how the Canadian public will react to Harper's obvious Bushmania. Hopefully, sanity will prevail, but only if the other parties get their blooming act together and move forward for the good of the country, rather than for their own dreams of power. Harper is giving away the store to woo voters, but he's from the Calgary school, who appear to be in close contact with the U.S. PNAC group. Keep your fingers crossed for us.

Aslamualaikum. For those

Aslamualaikum. For those who dont understand, it means peace be upon you. I have so upset since the bombing of lebanon. Afghanistan, then Iraq and now lebanon. Not to forget the curent crisis in the world where the majority of the world has been used and abused by the west and is still being exploited. Globalisation by G8 is the key evil here.Anyone who stands in the way of these countries becoming more rich and powerful is bombed, or supplied with arms (increasing revenues for the west) to kill each other. What can we do to make a difference.Yes, we can join demonstartions and write lettes of protest, but we could also make the US and Israeil take notice but seizing to shop in US and israeili stores such as Sainsburys, M&S. Stop buying popular brands such as Coca Cola and Pepsi. Spread the word to friends, and so on. I pray to Allah for help and justice for the millions around the world who are the real victims of terrosist US
