I've been reading Berlaymonster for a while. It's a anonymously contributed blog based on the happenings within the European Commission.
They've just had a ridiculous story on a competition to design a logo celebrating 50 years of the EU, with a 6,000 euro prize. The competition cost a stunning 200,000 Euro.
Underwhelming isn't it. But here's where the real stupidity lies. The logo is meant to show the unity of Europe, but it has to be translated into 24 languages, somewhat nulling the whole point of the exercise. It's just awful, the work of a few moments in photoshop.
Here's our version

I've no real objection to the prize (that's cheap compared to what most PR/design outfits would charge) but I'm not too clear what the 200k went on. Admin, I suppose...
As a logo, I've seen worse (although it would be nice to see some of the other entries). At least it's colourful. In defence of competitions, I would say that they often show up the professionals. IIRC the Spanish tourist board are still using one designed decades ago by a child, and very good it is too.

"IIRC"
I didn't. Apparently the Spanish 'sun' logo was designed by Joan Miro, who only made things look childlike. At least he was a real painter and not a PR consultant...

Daniel, I would suggest a simple logo that is readable. Perhaps simply saying EU 50 and a smaller strap line saying 1957 - 2007
Something that demonstrated unity without having to be translated into so many languages - implying disunity.
The logo that won isn't the english one btw - that has the umulat removed from the O and the accent removed from the E.
At least this logo will not
At least this logo will not kill people, not like the "war on terror".

although the 200,000 euros or whatever may sound like a lot it's a bargain when you take into account the cost of a p.r firm and advertising design. this is blairwatch, not the UKIP... or is it?
