British intelligence officials believe that al-Qaida is determined to attack the UK with a nuclear weapon, it emerged yesterday. The announcement, from an officially organised Foreign Office counter-terrorism briefing for the media, was the latest in a series of bleak assessments by senior officials and ministers about the terrorist threat facing Britain.

UK officials have detected "an awful lot of chatter" on jihadi websites expressing the desire to acquire chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear weapons.

Even now that Bush and Blair have to eat political humble pie by asking for Iran and Syria to help them out they still continue dictating terms and sabre rattling.

These two men are simply inept at the most basic forms of diplomacy.

The Syrian and Iranians must be laughing their heads off at their new found status of regional powers, all thanks to the ignorance and criminal behaviour of those two unspeakably bad people.

Anyone that thinks Iran or Syria want to help the US/UK/Israeli axis needs to see a psychiatrist - they now have there economic interests elsewhere and there is nothing the US/UK can offer them, least of all through veiled threats.

Engaging with the "axis of evil" signifies our weakened resolve, will demoralise our troops and give comfort to our enemies. It would send out entirely the wrong mess.... Oh sorry, that was last week.

I've just read it and it seems everything is everyone else's fault, seven invocations of 9/11 (must have forgotten about the london explosions), a couple of conflations of the 'war on terror' with the second world war, waves about some dead squaddies' corpses, repeats discredited misinfo against iran (who we , god help us, must deal with on our own terms).

I'm getting concerned. I watched Panorama on Sunday and thought maybe there was an underlying message to the whole programme.
It was stated that Libya/Ghadaffi were brought to heel with fear when Bush/Blair invaded Iraq because of Iraq's (non-existent) nuclear/WMD programme. My impression was at the time that Libya were offered all sorts of trade deals etc and sanctions were lifted in return for them dropping the nuclear/WMD programme.
However Iran and Syria didn't quake in their boots! Quite the reverse. It would seem that the bully boy tactics didn't work.

Question is was the BBC doing some PR work for Blair/Bush or were they making a point against their abortive policies?

Maybe someone with a better memory than me could put me straight on the facts regarding Libya's actions?

I have to agree with Anon @ 12:16 - the 'Aftermath' report was scarily all too believable. Just the kind of deranged dribble that might spew from the pens of Rumsfeld, Cheyney, Wolfowitz and any number of No.10 NuLabor policy wonks.

Since the US mid-term elections, and the sacking of Rummy, there has been a huge sigh of relief from much of UK political elite:- "Thank God that Rumsfeld has gone" "It was all Rummy's fault" etc etc. The Observer this week was full of it. If you or I had said this kind of thing a few weeks ago we would have been condemned for being anti-American. Of course, none of this answers the question: why didn't our political elite understand this guy (and his mates, and his beliefs) about 5 years ago? What happens the next time the US asks the UK to get involved in an illegal and risky war? Is the UK obliged (for some reason that we haven't beem told) to get involved in whatever military adventure the US dreams up?

I have just read the speech in full - and it was a struggle. He chose a curious way of addressing the former Lord Mayor as "my late Lord Mayor...". Technically correct, but rather suggesting that the poor old bugger was dead.

However, that is not my main point. My reaction to his words was that, had I heard them in person, I would have had to either walk out or be violently and ostentatiously sick - preferably all over him.

Blair's recent video chat with the Iraq Study Group includes this gem: "The Prime Minister told the ISG that what he believed was needed was a plan for Iraq"

So, what happened to the old one? Or has he only just realised...

It would be funny if it weren't so bloody tragic.
