A Peach of a Speech for the Law Nerds

Shocking stuff.

Police are looking for a gang of unprincipled cowards who attacked an elderly lady in Central London in broad daylight. The yobs, many in their trademark uniform of suits and ties, forced the woman, known to her friends as Liz and who suffers from a bad back, to perform a degrading oral act colloquially referred to as 'presenting the Government's legislative programme'

Anyway, for us folk who actually enjoy line-by-line reading of legislation, we can look forward to a classic package of Home Office shit - the spin is a 'focus on secure communities', which should be as much fun. This is Reid the Heid's first real opportunity to stamp his noxious brand of ambitious authoritarianism on the country and I must say I can't wait. Bring it on. I hope there's something to close loopholes that allow suspected criminals to get off on a technicality.

Just a few snippets from

Just a few snippets from summaries (Copyright: the Beeb) of some of the bills proposed by this increasingly fascistic government:

"Making it a criminal offence to view images of rape and sexual torture."

We'll have to take extra care when visiting places like the 'Institute of Contemporary Arts' or viewing some of the classic works of art and literature ... instant arrest if we view an image deemed inappropriate by this government.

"Police will also be given the power to throw home-owners out of their properties within 48 hours for committing anti-social behaviour."

Define anti-social behaviour. If my wife and I are a little over-exuberant during love-making, so as to be overheard by our neighbour who complains, will we be evicted from the property that we own ?

"Devolves the making of by-laws to councils and gives them powers to enforce these through fixed-penalty notices."

Clearly just enabling legislation for numerous new 'stealth taxes' to raise revenue for the local authorities, so that central government support can continue to be cut in real terms. You can just imagine all the local numpty councillors thinking up increasingly bizarre by-laws to ensure exponential income growth from petty fines.

And don't get me started on f*cking ID cards ?

...and very convenient for the government when evidence of torture at their/their friends hands comes to light. Can't see what your government gets up to in your name unless you want go to prison.

Don't you just wish that she

Don't you just wish that she would take her glasses off, chuck the script on the floor and refuse to read any more of such bollocks?

the reason one wants to be the PM is to do your own thing your way and not follow some list of to-do's left by a failed despot.

"Making it a criminal offence to view images of rape and sexual torture."

Does this mean that it will be illegal to view images of the Abu Ghraib prison?

Surely this is part of the game. If its illegal to view images of torture then its certainly illegal to publish such images.

No more embarrassing exposure of US/UK torture camps then?

Presumably this alludes to one of the overweight thugs on the labour front bench.

What's really depressing about this is that the BBC and most newspapers are treating this as great oratory, whereas he fumbled his words as soon as he went off-script.

I do wish the media would stop reinforcing his delusion that he's Churchill! I'd think the phrase "world's worst prime minister" is a better fit...

"Reid the Heid's first real

"Reid the Heid's first real opportunity to stamp his noxious brand of ambitious authoritarianism"

I agree that he's normally like that, but why then did he settle out of court with those prisoners whose supply of illegal substances he'd failed to maintain (to keep them in the manner to which they were accustomed)? Surely it sets a very peculiar precedent?

Despite the way the story

Despite the way the story was spun, Freda, it was essentially a medical negligence case.

Reid -- or, rather, the Prison Service -- had failed to maintain the prisoners' supply of legal substances -- legal because they'd been prescribed by their GPs to help treat their heroin addictions. Their medical condition and recommended treatment plan hadn't changed with their imprisonment, and the Prison Service hadn't taken them off methadone because of any medical reassessment of their condition. The Prison Service doesn't like dispensing methadone because it's got a black market value in prison, so it's just more convenient not to give it prisoners who've been prescribed it.

Despite the media hysteria

Despite the media hysteria it's worth remembering a few basic facts about drug use and prison. Most prison 'drug users' are addicted to legal prescription drugs, from methadone to diazepam. In fact most 'drug users' in Britain are addicted to generic prescription medicines.
If somebodies withdrawing from a serious addiction they're at risk of circulatory collapse and death. So of course they've got to recieve treatment.

It's just another state/media scam - we're all supposed to be a holdiay camp for paedophiles, in fact it's a brutal warehouse for the mentally ill and minorities.
