To be crusty and reactionary for a while, I sometimes think Labour should have spent less time pandering to upper middle class feminists - and upper middle class ex-68 trots and gay rights campaigners and anti fox-hunters - and slightly more time supporting the underpriveleged and poor - of all sexes, sexualities and races - and concerning itself with morality in its foreign policy.

A certain generation of good working class women got swept to one side - Alice Mahon, Gwyneth Dunwoody, Kate Hooey. If they'd prevailed at least there'd now be equal pay for all women.

Perhaps government should

Perhaps government should spend less time devising new ways of collecting tax, controlling citizens and extending the state mechanism.

Perhaps instead they should spend a little more time on being more accountable and less secretive to those the represent. Oh perhaps they are.....
