Unveiled! The Backdoor Ban in Schools
Posted March 20th, 2007 by quarsan
Why do things democratically when you can push them through the back door? Alan Johnson, Education Secretary and Deputy Leader candidate is allowing schools to ban the veil on grounds of, wait for it, "safety, security and teaching".
Naturally this news wasn't given to Parliament, instead he gave the Sun an exclusive, helping Murdoch's men carry on their islamaphobic campaign. I went to a very mixed school and the wearing of veils was a non issue, why has it suddenly become vital? Why has our tolerant educational system come apart so easily?
yes, it's very peculiar,
yes, it's very peculiar, isn't it; But sadly characteristic of how many things are done in Great Britain on the basis of unclear responsibilities. When it comes to the banning of Muslim apparel, it appears that it's up to the schools to decide; when, however, the government decides that something should happen (or not) then a ministerial circular issues and the opinions of the school itself can go hang. Similarly with the police : once the government says the something is an "operational police matter", another time it's the government that gives the tune.
Lack of clarity on responsibilities is of course a deliberate tactic. Which is also why governments of all colours ferociously resist a written consitution.
What we need now is this
What we need now is this Minister's considered opinion of the definition of those three terms, 'safety, security and teaching', and how they may be applied in a school environment? Or does he actually have a clue?
Maybe he'd have a better idea if he was talking about post offices?
What post offices? Oh
What post offices? Oh yeah, I remember them from when I was a kid...
If you want the support of
If you want the support of Murdoch them you have to bully the people he bullies or you're out the door.
Fact Number One in British "Political" Life.
