Sy Hersch With The Latest From La-La-Land
Posted September 30th, 2007 by Tom
Department of Blowing Shit Up, Summer 2007:
During a secure videoconference that took place early this summer, the President told Ryan Crocker, the U.S. Ambassador to Iraq, that he was thinking of hitting Iranian targets across the border and that the British “were on board.” At that point, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice interjected that there was a need to proceed carefully, because of the ongoing diplomatic track. Bush ended by instructing Crocker to tell Iran to stop interfering in Iraq or it would face American retribution.

Hang on, early summer? Blair went end of June, we're fairly confident he would have been 'on board', the sacking of Jack Straw as Foreign Sec. is generally taken to be a slap down to suggestions that attacking Iran was off the agenda. I sincerely hope that any risk of the British being 'on board' with another engineered, illegal Middle East war died with the late Premiership. Did it?
Of course, if Blair promised Bush British support *again* without bothering to consult Parliament, can the Labour Government please stop pretending we've learnt from Iraq and prosecute the bastard? How *is* that Middle East peace mission going, Tony? Anyone trust you yet?

Pages 4 and 5 of Sy Hersch's
Pages 4 and 5 of Sy Hersch's article contain more stuff on what he thinks Brown is up to, but I'm not sure I buy it - it's quoting a 'European official' and a 'retired four-star US general' on the subject of British government attitudes, which rings alarm bells for accuracy. I seriously doubt that Brown is going to call an election just as he's trying to gear us up to join in against Iran - however, it's possible that the election, if it's called early, is partly to get it out of the way before he puts his cock on the block by backing a Bush-led war in the Middle East based on dodgy intelligence. He can't count on winning big via the 'I'm not Blair' gambit with that one playing out across the country, and not many of us are foolish enough to swallow the line that we must attack Iran because they're the guilty party in UK military deaths in Iraq, we know it was Tony Blair, after all. As for starting a full-scale war over the kidnapped sailors, purlease, we were more exercised about the media scrum and story sales than the kidnap. Sometimes being shallow is a *good* thing, and I'm not just talking about sea levels in the Gulf.
Brown, the new senator from
Brown, the new senator from England, is an even more committed Atlantacist than Blair. I think we can all anticipate how the next war will occur: Israel will launch a 'defensive' raid on Iranian 'nuclear facilities,' possibly deploying its newly purchased long range bombers - conveniently provided by the US and now stationed in Eastern Turkey.
Iran, predictably, will retaliate against Israel with missile strikes. The western media will ignore Iranian casualties and the Israeli aggression (they've been doing this for thirty years, so have plenty of practice) and present the attack on Israel as the beginning of a New Holocaust. Western intellectuals, across the entire spectrum, will soon be marching in unison and demanding a new 'just war' of humanitarian intervention against the 'new Hitler' in the Middle East.
Bush will launch air-strikes against Iran and the Iranians will occupy the straits of Hormuz, bringing the global oil industry to rapid halt. America, with British support, will be forced to launch a ground war or contemplate the end of industrial capitalism.
The script's already written so let's just hope that Bush and Cheney don't get the chance. But we all know which way Brown, the TUC and the official 'British Left will jump!

According to Hersh Brown is seriously on board:
"...The bombing plan has had its most positive reception from the newly electe government of Britain’s Prime Minister, Gordon Brown. A senior Europea official told me, “The British perception is that the Iranians are not making th progress they want to see in their nuclear-enrichment processing. All th intelligence community agree that Iran is providing critical assistance, training and technology to a surprising number of terrorist groups in Iraq an Afghanistan, and, through Hezbollah, in Lebanon, and Israel/Palestine, too....
....A retired American four-star general with close ties to the British military told me that there was another reason for Britain’s interest—shame over the failure of the Royal Navy to protect the sailors and Royal Marines who were seized by Iran on March 23rd, in the Persian Gulf. “The professional guys are saying that British honor is at stake, and if there’s another event like that in the water off Iran the British will hit back,†he said...""
I, for one, never had any faith in Brown. As pointed out above, he is an even more fanatical Atlanticist than Blair. This is national suicide.

The oldest cliché is that truth is the first casualty of war.
And the question I'd love to
And the question I'd love to see put to Brown is this - Why is Pakistan considered an ally while Iran is considered a threat? The former is a dictatorship sitting in on a powderkeg of fundamentalism while the latter actually has elections! Why is Iran's refining of nuclear fuel considered a threat to world stability but, say, Brazil doing the same thing isn't?
