For The Love Of God, NO!!
I guess most of us knew that Blair wouldn't be satisfied with his job of Middle East peace [sic] envoy for very long. It doesn't give him the power he is used to wielding and it means that he has to face a few realities about the plight of the Palestinians and facing up to realities was never Blair's strongest point. So it shouldn't be surprising that Blair would use his current job as a launch pad for a more ambitious role. Worse still, Gordon Brown is supporting him all the way.
Tony Blair would be a "great candidate" for any big international job, Gordon Brown said today amid speculation over who would be the first president of the European council.
It follows a claim in the Financial Times that Mr Blair was being "heavily promoted" for the job by the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy.
It's hard to imagine a worse candidate for the job. Nevertheless, Blair has been trying to raise his profile by ingratiating himself even further with his neo con masters. He's just given a speech at a charity dinner in New York in which he sounded more like mad Melanie Phillips than ever as he tried to compare Iran with Nazi Germany in the 1930s (video here).
“Analogies with the past are never properly accurate, and analogies especially with the rising fascism can be easily misleading but, in pure chronology, I sometimes wonder if we’re not in the 1920s or 1930s again.
Funny, I've been wondering the same thing myself only I see the threat coming not from Iran but from the deeply insane psychopaths in Washington and their sycophantic followers who have already destabilised the entire region. Of course Blair couldn't resist referring to September 11 2001 in a pathetic attempt to associate the Iranian regime with that atrocity.
Mr Blair went on: “I said straight after the attack of September 2001 that this was not an attack on America but on all of us. That Britain’s duty was to be shoulder to shoulder with you in confronting it. I meant it then and I mean it now.”
He added: “America and Europe should not be divided, we should stand up together.
So Blair is as hawkish as ever and seemingly determined to plunge us into yet another war. By becoming president of the European council he presumably thinks he can help bring about another disaster.

Isn't their an international arrest warrant out for him yet?
Well, there is certainly a
Well, there is certainly a serious risk that the bugger might make it, all the more so since the one person who would have been serious about blocking him - President Chirac - has departed the scene.
The chances are - unfortunately perhaps, but that's how these things go - that the Heads of State or Government which make up the European Council will not want a President who has not himself been a member of the European Council (or even chaired it). Here Blair's only serious rival would be Luxemburg PM Juncker, who would be available at the time the post would need to be filled, ie, as from 1 January 2009 (to be noted that the future President of the European Council cannot hold a national political post at the same time). But Juncker has rubbed some powerful people, not least Sarkozy and Merkel, up the wrong way because he's quite an outspoken chap. Lord Tony, on the other hand, is a greaser-up. There is also some talk about Commission President Barroso; difficult to judge his chances - on the one hand, he's considered to have done a good job so far as Commission President, but he would have to step down early to make the 1 January 2009 timeline. So that's how things stand at the moment. Of course, there's still some time to go, and by the time that Heads will have to come to a decision - the autumn of 2008 - another name or names might have emerged.
On the brighter side, we should also note that the appointment is not permanent but for 2 and 1/2 half years (admittedly renewable once) and that when it comes to laying down in detail the guy's tasks and the limits of his powers, those Memeber States which were in fact never keen on having a "permanent" President - ie, most of the Member States! - will do their level best to make sure that his role is as ceremonial and as empty of real substance as possible.
Lets not kid ourselves the
Lets not kid ourselves the next president of the european council will be picked by the president of the USA. Arm bending will be applied and woe betide any person/country that doesn`t do as they are told. Not that it matters they are all in the same club to begin with.
I may be wrong, but wasn't
I may be wrong, but wasn't Iran one of the first nations to condemn the attacks of 9/11 and to offer America its condolences?
Would the title of this new
Would the title of this new EU job possibly be FÜHRER for LIFE. Ein Reich, Ein Volk, Ein Führer. Heil Blair eerrrmmm does it have that ring?
So the useless aunt
So the useless aunt (predictive text sometimes gets the wrong word) has done stuff all to alleviate any Palestinian suffering and now wants to get promoted to an even more powerful, position with an even bigger salary, so he can stuff us all a bit more before he actually has to do something useful in the Middle East?
Come the revolution ...................
well, he won't be picked
well, he won't be picked directly by the American President, but Heads will certainly choose someone who would be persona grata. But as George Dutton implies, it's difficult to think of any current or past Head who isn't (apart from Chirac and perhaps Verhofstadt, who doesn't have a chance anyway).
I think that the problem with Blair is less what he would make out of the job (don't forget that the creation of this post is to a large extent spin, in that it isn't guaranteed that whoever it is will actually be a very powerful figure) than that it would again demonstrate the sad truth that scum will always rise to the top even if it's been temporarily submerged.
If this atrocity is foisted
If this atrocity is foisted upon us it will only be because of dubbya, where else is the good will? Just look at the EU voting system, a direct result of the UKs (read US trojan horse) entry into the EU, embrace, extend etc. Just check the schizophrenia out, yes we want to be at the heart of the EU but we want to keep our US working practices! I just knew that git would want to get out of the ME, even a single celled organism can detect unhealthy levels of heat and modify itself accordingly. But potentially four more years of seeing that grinning grotesque abhoration of a human being splattered over the media is just too much. Grrrr.
I read a summary of Blah's
I read a summary of Blah's speech and thought that he`s clearly off his rocker. I think it was one of the Latin American dissenters who wondered aloud if the elites of America were secretly all adherents of a cult centred around some ancient, sacrificial Aztec god, one which needed feeding with regular, blood-drenched outbursts of violence. Then you see and hear the kind of paranoid death-lust gibber that Bush and Blair come out with constantly and you think, yes, these people are insane.
And Blair as the Prez of the Euro commission? - as above, who could bear to see and hear that fatuous, lying creep ever again?
The persuasiveness of the
The persuasiveness of the opinions of posters like tio and Captain Swing would be greater if they managed to get just basic facts correct. The future President of the European Council will be appointed for 2 and 1/2 years and not 4 (although the term can be renewed once). And, Captain Swing, it's the European Council and not the European Commission; the latter already has a President, whose term of office willl normally expire in 2009.
The problem is that Bliar's not damaged goods in Europe to the same extent that he is in the UK. But that's understandable : contrary to what some think, European publics and media don't spend their entire time thinking, writing and speaking about the UK and so the full measure of his ghastliness is not often appreciated here.
Thanks for that, Guano, I
Thanks for that, Guano, I stand corrected. But when you do a bit of digging (courtesy of Wikipedia etc) you come up with an odd proliferation of bodies. There`s the European Commission, the European Council, the Council of Europe, and...wait for it....the Council of the European Union!
Can`t help but get flashes from Life of Brian - is that Judean People`s Front, or the People`s Front of Judea?
So that's potentially five
So that's potentially five years then, my bad. But Guano you've got a point. It is to be expected that Joe EU is going to be unaware of the machinations of NuLabour but you must have been living in a cave not to have noticed Bliars function in enabling the horror that is Iraq? WMD hysteria, War on Terror, Axis of Evil and the debacle that was the UN? Maybe I'm wrong, I hope not. I feel overwhelmed by righteous indignation that this odious villain is not on tial, it's hard not start thrashing away on the keyboard when faced with this news.
It's quite interesting to
It's quite interesting to see Bliar comparing Iran to Nazism in the 20's and 30's. A real case of the kettle calling the teapot black bum, if ever there was one.
Barroso's office refuses to act on NAZISM in Germany today, even though I have supplied them with the evidence, which comes from German Govt. sources. They are apparently not allowed to interfere in the activities of Member States, this brings into question the EU Treaty, specifically the Charter of Fundamental Rights. The citizen cannot invoke this document because it would automatically mean investigating the affairs of a Member State.

Looks like the neo-con
Looks like the neo-con strategy has been a success, at least by the twisted standards of the planners: the war's cost $1 trillion, but there's about $30 trillion of oil under the deserts of Iraq. Thanks to US/UK covert operations the Iraqi's are weak and divided, ensuring that oil revenues will now flow in a familiar fashion to western corporations and Wall Street, with no nonsense from a nationalist government.
China's been locked out the region, and the US can now slow China's growth with the turn of a spigot. Saudi Arabia will be weakened and so will Iran. All this and more, and for less American lives than are lost yearly on the freeway. Trebles all round at Halliburton and a cushy job for Mr Blair.
