Anecdotely, I keep hearing commentators on the Radio, and TV mentioning the lack of support for, and solid opposition to the proposed bill that is reflected in calls texts and emails, and on a vague straw poll of people I have spoken to about it, at least 3/4 appear to be vehemently opposed.

So where did the YouGov Poll come from, the one that is being quoted everywhere as saying 70% of Brits support 90 days?
Apparently it was comissioned by the same guys that are responsible for this:

THE Sun today calls on its army of readers to back Prime Minister Tony Blair and DEMAND 90-day detention for terror suspects.

Phone our special hotline NOW to make your voice heard.

The people’s will can force MPs to bring safety to Britain’s streets by backing the detention of terror suspects for 60 days at the very least — but preferably 90.

SpyBlog are on the case however, and do a great job of deconstructing questions, and the poll results:

The NuLabour supporting Murdoch media empire owned Sky News has commissioned a YouGov telephone poll (.pdf) which is already being misquoted by the likes of the Daily Mail, claiming that the general public supports the controversial 90 day detention without charge proposal in the Terrorism Bill 2005.

Although not quite as biased as the online Labour party mockery, it does show that "he who pays the pollster gets to bias the questions"...

Blair is playing a high stakes game with his volte face over consensus, and doubtless NL are employing every dirty trick in the book to push this through.

It remains to be seen whether a few (Cornerstone?) Conservative MPs are prepared to defy their whip, and whether the Labour backbenchers have any backbone left at all. The Lib Dem whips office assure us that they will ALL be in attendence, and this afternoon offered BB their profuse apologies about the missing 2 last time, and George Galloway's tour mangement assure us he has no bookings with them on wednesday.
