Spying on the US by the US
Yes, Dubya no doubt broke the law with his secret spying inside the US. Even mainstream media appears to have awoken from its slumber and is
savaging Bush for this. But it's not just Dubya. The Pentagon is spying on those dangerous peaceniks too. This includes a demonstration that I, as a member of the ANSWER Coalition, helped organize. Not that this spying on our completely legal and peaceful activities comes as any surprise to us.
We held a street corner peace vigil last night in Hollywood and will have another major march and rally in March at the same location where they monitored us last time. I'll be sure to smile for them.
Ron Kovic spoke last night at the vigil. He's been in a wheelchair since Vietnam, was a founder of Vietnam Veterans Against the War, and has been an activist ever since. He said opposition to the war is now mainstream, that the Bush Administration is on the verge of collapse, and called on those breaking the law on orders of Bush and the Pentagon to refuse to do so further. We are winning the antiwar struggle, he said, let’s keep organizing. Link with podcast
Long time organizer Blase Bonpane also spoke. He says "the enemy is militarism," detailing the endless wars and invasions of the US have destroyed the public sector of the United States. He points out that since Korea, the United States has lost every war it has fought. Except for Grenada that is, a country smaller than the city of Santa Monica which has no army. The Pentagon did succeed in blowing up their mental hospital. We need health care, better schools, and to "end the addiction to war."Link with podcast.
Bush is badly weakened. Even the right is attacking him. Happily, he's probably too comatose and arrogant to comprehend what's happening. If he falls, Blair will too.

Yes, the US is finally awakening from its snooze, the media included. It's been a long time comin' and a long time overdue. But it is happening.
Every day brings more news of torture, spying, botched wars, graft and corruption, more coverups, etc. These are not normal times.
As for optimism, I'd say, the more you organize and actively oppose the endless wars of the neocons, the more optimistic you become. I'm up to my eyeballs in blogging, and blogs are hugely important in spreading news, however it's the getting in the streets that really makes you see that change is happening.
And it really is a kick to spend months organizing a mass march and rally, then have tens of thousands show up.

Does this mean we now might actually see the impeachment of a president for genuine crimes? God I hope so, but I still can't bring myself to fully believe it.

Impeachment? Who knows? I just have the feeling he won't last out his term. He's becoming bad for business, there's a crisis in the ruling ranks, they may move to force him from power.
