More on the Gitmo Film Arrests
Posted February 20th, 2006 by quarsan
Seems the doubters were wrong, and the people involved in making "The Road To Guantanamo" were arrested on their return to Britain. the full story is required reading for anyone interested in how civil liberties are being abused under New Labour's authoritarian legislation. Here's a taste of the interrogation
While searching through my wallet she asked me whether I intended to do more documentary films, specifically more political ones like The Road to Guantanamo. She asked “Did you become an actor mainly to do films like this, you know, to publicise the struggles of Muslims?â€Â.
She also asked me what my political views were, what I thought about “the Iraq war and everything else that was going onâ€Â, whether the Iraq war was “right†in my view.
She then asked me whether I would mind officers contacting me regularly in the future, “in case, for example, you might be in a café, and you overhear someone discussing illegal activitiesâ€Â.
Hat Tip: Talk Politics
I'd have been happier if it
I'd have been happier if it had turned out untrue (apart from Craig M getting muddled between whether it was at Stansted and Luton, which is forgivable when the story is at second or third hand) - that's from the horse's mouth and it's absolutely outrageous. I'd like to see questions in the House (stand up and be counted, Ming) as to whether controls on theatre along the lines of Stalin or Hitler are on next year's legislative programme.
Given that a prominent neo-con (Professor Name-Escapes-Me, but a complete bottom-feeder of the highest order) was on the BBC last week calling the released detainees 'trained liars' and 'propagandists', apparently for helping make this film, I think pressure needs to be put on the Government to reaffirm that these men are innocent and won't be persecuted to save face with the insane US administration.
I'll spread the link around a bit to make up for doubting it. Two source intelligence is better than one, after all.
So these people were
So these people were arrested, because they dared to "publicise the struggles of Muslims"! How dare they attempt a representation of brutal abuse and torture, while Blair & Co are enaged in their crusade against Muslims.
From the quote that is certainly the impression you get. Disgraceful.
If that is an example of
If that is an example of frontline, "sharp end" , "intelligence led" anti-terrorist policing, then there needs to be some serious re-training of the Special Branch officers and their entire chain of command, at Luton Airport.
Is that really the way that they expect to gather usable "intelligence" or to recruit confidential human informants ?
Many thanks for passing this
Many thanks for passing this story on - I urge any readers with an interest in these events to pass the link on further so that people find out the extent of the security hysteria and institutionalised racism in this country!
Please feel free to leave your comments on the LIP website too. The story features in today's Guardian, but the LIP is one of the only places people will find Riz's full story.
