The Tory Education Bill - Labour Pleading for MPs Support via Video

Check out the results of this YouGov poll of Labour members, commissioned by Compass, on the Education Bill:

Only 5% want all new schools set up and run by outside organisations and only 25% support the compromise of most new schools.

60% think LEAs should have the power to set up new schools without the Secretary of State’s veto.

64% think LEAs should manage school expansion.

A massive 80% don’t want Trusts to have even ‘some influence’ over what those schools teach.

Followed by an even bigger 84% who want Trust schools to be accountable to local communities via a majority of elected representatives on the governing body.

80% want all parent governors to be elected by parents.

72% think fair access is the highest priority for admissions procedure. Only 13% opt for max choice, 11% for diversity.

56% want LEAs to manage the allocation of places, 36% back a Code of Practice.

Then watch this dire promotional video commissioned by Progress, explaining it is a Labour bill, and pleading with Labour MPs to vote for it.

"btw - somebody could point out to Jack Straw, that his childrens brothers and sisters are his children too..."

Not necessarily - they could be Blunkett's.

somebody could point out to

somebody could point out to Jack Straw, that his childrens brothers and sisters are his children too

Not necessary, if he'd done a Blunkett had an affair, then he could have fathered kids who would have half brothers/sisters who weren't his children.

But, still. I wish Govts would stop playing politics with schools. Big commission, cross party, get all the parties to sign up to the results, implement and leave for at least 15 years. This constant ping-pong is damaging.

MatGB, you are of course

MatGB, you are of course completely right - does that mean we have a Jack Straw lovechild sccop:)

Is there anyone (still) in

Is there anyone (still) in the Labour party that hasn't been a minister in the DfES? Watching that video of the "here today gone tomorrow" I realise how piss poor my own MP must be to be so loyal for so long yet be repeatedly overlooked.

If the Whips can't get the

If the Whips can't get the dissenters, such as Austin Mitchell, through the right lobby how can they possibly expect a set of talking heads, spouting airy fairy aspirations with no substance, to do the job? Also the fact that they have used a device such as this, as piss poor as it is, is surely an admission that the Bliar (who was somewhat conspicuous by his absence?) and Ruth Kelly have lost the argument with their own people. It will be interesting to see the Bliar's lagacy put in place by the Tories!

It has to be said, but that

It has to be said, but that parade of MP's is hardly the 'best and brightest' is it.

As someone who comes from

As someone who comes from Blackburn I was disgusted but not surprised to hear Jack Straw talking about Queens Park High School. The improvment he talks about since the school was closed down and a "superhead" came in is not attributable to that change. The kids who got the 11% results were a particularly bad year, and the 20-odd% result was gained by kids who had been in the failing school for all but 6 weeks of their education. The school was closed at Easter, and the new one opened just in time for them to sit their GCSEs. To say their score was a result of the new school is an insult to the teachers who taught them for over 4.75 of their 5 years there. Teachers who, incidentally, were all fired when the school closed.
