The Smell Of Decay

I've long argued that New Labour's corruption makes the Major years look amateurish and the stench of corruption in Downing Street is masked only by the smell of decay.

Today's admission that donors were put up for honours in return for cash is further confirmation that, if anything, we've underestimated the deceit and dishonesty at the core of New Labour.

Getting a conviction will be almost impossible as it's all done on a nod and a wink, but as investigations continue, even bringing in Milliband - who may or may not blog this ; )

Is Blair contrite? Of course not:

This weekend Downing Street began a campaign to defend the use of honours to reward academy sponsors. “We want to celebrate the fact they have done this,” said a source.

Another senior Blair aide added: “Successful people are being beaten up and it will be horrendous if they stop donating to good causes.”

This is going to get interesting. Lord Levy is determined not to be a scapegoat and is muttering darkly that it was all Tony's idea.

Oh yes, this could get interesting...

The police have already raided the Cabinet Office looking for documents related to the awarding of honours.

It was reported last night that Blair may be questioned by police as a “significant witness”, possibly next month. A spokesman said Downing Street had received no request for an interview with or statement from Blair, but if any were made, “we will co-operate fully”.

Very interesting...

Its not great on analysis of the issues. Ascribing Tony's unpopularity to the fact he has been around a long time is typical of the sanitised mainstream US media approach. I do not buy into the gripe re Cherie Booth either.
